Justin Bieber Joins Selena Gomez At UNICEF Concert

Posted by Adam Pollicino on January 23, 2012

Selena Gomez hit the stage for UNICEF in Los Angeles, with Justin Bieber, David Beckham and Ashley Tisdale on hand for support.

Gomez and her band performed at her second annual charity concert at the House Of Blues to benefit the U.S. Fund for UNICEF’s work providing lifesaving nutrition, clean water, medicine, safety and education to children worldwide.

“Thank You to all who came out to the show last night at House of Blues on Sunset,” she wrote on Facebook. “That is one of the shows I look forward to the most and cannot wait for next year’s show.

“I don’t have an exact number but together we all raised over 200,000 dollars to benefit Unicef. We’re helping to save the lives of children all over the world.”

Selena was appointed a UNICEF Ambassador in 2009 and has traveled to Ghana and Chile to witness UNICEF’s work first-hand in the field. She has since supported many of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF’s events, projects and campaigns, including the George Harrison Fund for UNICEF, the UNICEF TAP Project and Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF. Selena’s first charity concert to benefit UNICEF was held in celebration of the 60th Anniversary of Trick-or-Treat forUNICEF in October 2010.

“Giving back has always been important to me,” said Selena. “This concert allows me to connect with my fans in person which is one of the best parts of my job and to raise money for important causes at the same time I can’t think of anything I would enjoy doing more.”

Clinton Foundation Celebrates Accomplishments Of 2011

Posted by Adam Pollicino on January 9, 2012

The William J. Clinton Foundation has announced broad accomplishments in 2011 in the areas of economic opportunity, childhood obesity, emergency relief and long-term recovery, global health and nutrition, and climate and energy.

Building on a lifetime of public service, President Bill Clinton established the Clinton Foundation with the mission to improve global health, strengthen economies, promote healthier childhoods, and address climate change by fostering partnerships among governments, businesses, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), and private citizens to turn good intentions into measurable results.

Since 2001 President Clinton’s vision and leadership have resulted in nearly 4 million people benefiting from lifesaving HIV/AIDS treatment; more than 13,000 U.S. schools building healthier learning environments; more than 26,000 micro-entrepreneurs, small business owners, and smallholder farmers improving their livelihoods and communities; and more than 2 million tons of greenhouse gases cut or abated in some of the world’s largest cities. And President Clinton has redefined the way we think about giving and philanthropy through his Clinton Global Initiative, whose members have made more than 2,100 commitments that have already improved the lives of nearly 400 million people in more than 180 countries.

Some highlights include:

  • More than 300 new Commitments to Action made by Clinton Global Initiative members that, once fully funded, will be valued in excess of $18 billion
  • Providing more than 25,000 cataracts surgeries in Peru
  • Closing the Bordo Poniente Landfill in Mexico City, which will stem the city’s largest source of greenhouse gas and create renewable energy and local jobs
  • A price reduction from $15 to $5 per child for AIDS medication in poor countries

Stars Help Feed The Homeless For Christmas

Posted by Adam Pollicino on December 26, 2011

It was the biggest Christmas event ever for Skid Row families at the Los Angeles Mission on Friday. Thousands of toys were wrapped and handed out to kids in a huge Christmas Wonderland tent – as all enjoyed a gourmet meal served to nearly 4,000.

Toyota was the primary sponsor for the event, with toys donated by JAKKS Pacific, and the Sharing the Spirit Holiday Party presented by the Festival for Children Foundation. And as usual, a host of stars turned out to brighten everyone’s day!

“It takes a lot of support and volunteer hours to put this size of celebration together,” said Herbert L. Smith, President of the Mission. “Thousands of lives were touched today, not just the guests, but the volunteers and staff, too. I saw lots of smiles and laughter, something you don’t often see on the streets of Skid Row.”

Thanks to a financial donation from Toyota as well as thousands of toys from JAKKS Pacific and hundreds from other donors, children were delighted by the day. The Sharing the Spirit Holiday Party featured Santa, decorations, music and crafts for the children. Toys were wrapped so children had the choice of opening them immediately or waiting until Christmas morning. Hundreds of volunteer hours were spent sorting, wrapping and marking the gifts so they could be distributed in an age and gender appropriate manner.

Celebrity Chef Ben Ford of Ford’s Filling Station worked with the Los Angeles Mission Chef Chris Cormier and the kitchen staff to envision and prepare the meal. There was lemon-rosemary roasted chicken, the Mission’s famous mac and cheese, fresh glazed carrots with thyme, a special Winter Fruit Chutney created by Chef Ford, and apple compound butter for the dinner rolls. The meal was rounded out by pies for dessert.

“Los Angeles Mission is extremely important to the entire community of LA,” Said Chef Ford. “Being born and raised in LA, I’ve watched them grow and handle the daunting task of feeding LA’s disadvantaged. I was very excited when they asked me to be part of their 75th anniversary holiday celebration, and I look forward to feeding the hearts and souls of our guests.”

Finishing touches on the meal were provided by Chef Ford and Gilles Marini (Parenthood), Boo Boo Stewart (Twilight), and Edwin Hodge (Cougartown) – along with Tracy Underwood from sponsor Toyota and Sandy Segerstrom Daniels, Founder of Festival of Children Foundation Friday morning in a special demonstration kitchen. The meal was served by celebrities, elected leaders and other volunteers to the seated guests in the Christmas decorated outdoor dining area on Fifth Street.

“The Los Angeles Mission provides wonderful support and services to Los Angeles families in need, and Toyota is proud to help the Mission make the holidays a bit brighter for them for the second year in a row,” said Underwood, Toyota Motor Sales’ national manager of corporate philanthropy. “Two hundred of our associates from our Torrance campus were onsite to volunteer their time at the Mission’s holiday dinner to show support for those working to rebuild their lives.”

“The Los Angeles Mission is very grateful to Toyota and the other companies who donated to make today’s event successful,” said President Smith. “The economy doldrums and high unemployment have really impacted Los Angeles, and we are seeing that impact every day as more individuals and families come for help. Coupled with a downturn in donations because of the same economic situation, we are faced with doing more with less. It is because of generous donors that we are able to continue to help those who need it every day – not just for the momentary need, but to help long-term.”

“JAKKS is pleased to provide toys for the Los Angeles Mission Christmas Celebration to create a magical experience for thousands of deserving children this holiday season,” said Anne-Marie Feliciano, Vice President of Corporate Communications & Philanthropy, JAKKS Pacific. “We are grateful to the Los Angeles Mission for the vital work they do to improve the lives of underserved children in the community.”

Festival for Children Foundation staff and volunteers arrived early Friday morning to set up the 2,000 square foot Festival of Children Foundation Sharing the Spirit Holiday Party tent on Skid Row. There were decorated Christmas trees, giant nutcrackers, Santa and his sleigh, Hello Kitty crafts, and each child received a bag of toys. More than 50 volunteers made a very special place for the children of Skid Row with decorations, snow and loads of fun.

“These children need and deserve to feel special,” said Sandy Segerstrom Daniels, Founder of Festival of Children Foundation. “At the end of the day our hope is that they also feel loved.”

Friday morning started early for the staff and volunteers and the Mission. There were last minute gift donations to wrap, and the big dinner to prepare. And the volunteers in the kitchen early Friday also served breakfast to those who came early to stand in line. Volunteers also handed out hot breakfast sandwiches and cider to the waiting families.

At 5:00 AM Fifth Street from Wall Street to San Pedro was closed to vehicular traffic and the street set up started.

Many who came to Friday’s event live in temporary housing in the Skid Row area, others in shelters, and many came from the streets. All are greeted by staff and volunteers with love and served a hearty meal and given holiday treats. As they waited to be seated and served, the guests enjoyed holiday music from a number of local musical groups.

Rose McGowan Launches Campaign Against Pulmonary Fibrosis

Posted by Adam Pollicino on December 19, 2011

Actress Rose McGowan, perhaps best known for her roles on TV’s long-running, Charmed, and the 2011 motion picture, Conan the Barbarian, among others, is taking a lead role in a profound real life drama.

In 2009, she lost her father, artist Daniel McGowan, to Pulmonary Fibrosis (PF), an incurable lung disease that has no cure and no FDA-approved treatments, and which kills more than 40,000 Americans each year… as many as breast cancer. She’s now taking a lead role to build awareness to fight the disease and working with the Coalition for Pulmonary Fibrosis (CPF).

On Friday, December 16th, McGowan posted a message about her work with the CPF and the need for increased awareness for PF on her Facebook page.

As CPF’s Ambassador and Chair of The Daughters of PF campaign, a new program of the CPF, a 501C3 non-profit foundation, McGowan plans to help generate wide public awareness about PF, which has thus far been little known to the broad U.S. public. In so doing, she intends to use her celebrity to shine a spotlight on PF, much as other prominent individuals have done for diseases such as AIDS, breast cancer, Parkinson’s, and others.

For those stricken with PF, the lungs become scarred to the point that they can no longer make the necessary blood-oxygen exchange necessary to breathe and eventually causes patients to suffocate. Currently there is no PF treatment approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) and there is no cure. McGowan, having witnessed personally the cruelty of the disease, has committed to taking a prominent role in the national effort to fight PF.

“Pulmonary Fibrosis is a horrible, horrible way to go. It makes me quite angry that not a lot of people know about it. I want to help change that,” said Rose McGowan. “My decision to help the CPF in their work to stop PF is my way of keeping my dad’s legacy alive and making a contribution to the world in his name. There are many causes that are better known, but watching the inexorable destruction that PF wreaks on the patient and their family and friends has convinced me of the urgency of this work. We are losing as many patients as breast cancer, but the investment in research for PF is minimal – it’s time for a change.

“I am now in the fight to stop this horrible disease because you can’t change anything by bemoaning your fate or sitting on the sidelines. After dealing with this tough loss, I have determined that my course needs to be one of helping to stop the disease – my loss can be turned into a win for all those diagnosed with PF in the future.

“None of us can effect change on our own, but as a united group we can use our numbers to build national awareness of this terrible disease, demand attention to it and help fund the day-to-day work needed to help all those affected. We need a very large team of people coming together to generate a more active national campaign against PF.”

“We are honored that Rose is taking on this cause and helping give patients and families a voice in fighting this horrible disease,” said Mishka Michon, CEO of the Coalition for Pulmonary Fibrosis. “Because she has been directly affected by PF through her father’s illness and death, she has a unique perspective and personally understands the plight of patients and their families. Her efforts will contribute to forever changing the landscape for this little known killer disease, and her celebrity, talent, and energy will serve to not only build needed awareness of the disease, but it will also help lead to developing successful treatments and eventually a cure.”

As the Chair of the Daughters of PF and an Ambassador for the CPF, McGowan will help raise public awareness of the disease by speaking out and doing media interviews, attending or hosting public events, and interacting with PF sufferers and their families, including via social media. The Daughters of PF program inspires daughters and other family members to turn their grief and pain into action by holding awareness and fundraising efforts in their local areas. To learn more about Daughters of PF, visit www.coalitionforpf.org.

McGowan starred as Paige Matthews in Charmed and starred in the movie Conan the Barbarian. She has the lead role as Mary Winkler in the upcoming made-for-TV movie, The Pastor’s Wife. She also stars in a new film, Rosewood Lane.

Andrea Bocelli Launches Charity At Star-Studded Gala

Posted by Adam Pollicino on December 12, 2011

Girard-Perregaux, iconic luxury Swiss watch brand, was proud to partner up with the Andrea Bocelli, the world’s highest selling solo artist in the history of classical music, in the launch of his new foundation, the Andrea Bocelli Foundation, with a 2011 Benefit Gala on December 9th.

The foundation was launched at a fundraising event produced by Studiomusica and Jo Champa presented by the Grammy Museum Foundation and held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles seeking to raise funds and awareness for its efforts to fight poverty around the world and to help people overcome barriers caused by illness, discomfort or disability.

The fundraising Gala featured an auction and performances by Andrea Bocelli himself, as well as icons David Foster, Heather Headley, Anna Maria Martinez and a special surprise performance by Michael Bolton. In addition, Bocelli presented the first foundation award, a Girard-Perregaux World Timer timepiece, to iconic music recorder and producer Quincy Jones for his worldwide philanthropic efforts. The night came to an end with Bocelli’s iconic song “Con Te Partiro”.

Other celebrities attending included Evan Rachel Wood, Camilla Belle, Julie Benz, Chaka Khan, Linda Ramone, Chris Spencer and others.

“I feel very strongly about helping people make the most of the world that we live in”, says Andrea Bocelli. “I was born with a poor eyesight and became completely blind at the age of twelve. Overcoming blindness and dealing with its consequences has taught me about the nature of externally imposed limits, and has encouraged me to think about how to help and support others facing barriers in their lives. Every human being has the right to be happy, fulfilled and to live a flourishing and meaningful life. I want to help those who face barriers in achieving their life’s potential”.

Alec Baldwin And Meryl Streep Attend Christopher Reeve Foundation Gala

Posted by Adam Pollicino on December 5, 2011

The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation hosted its annual star-studded A Magical Evening fundraising gala on Wednesday, November 30th at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.

Longtime Reeve Foundation supporters Alec Baldwin and Meryl Streep served as the evening’s special guests, along with actors Mark Ruffalo, Dave Annable and Christopher Reeve’s children Matthew Reeve, Alexandra Reeve Givens and Will Reeve. This year’s A Magical Evening gala was the most successful to date, raising close to $3 million, which will help fulfill the Reeve Foundation’s mission of “Today’s Care. Tomorrow’s Cure.”

The success of this year’s gala is largely due to the evening’s honorees that have shown amazing strength and fortitude and have provided a constant source of support and guidance to the Reeve Foundation. As a dear friend of both Christopher and Dana Reeve and a pioneer in investment banking, philanthropy, media and new ventures, Peter D. Kiernan, III, the former Chairman of the Board of the Reeve Foundation, was presented with the 2011 Dana ReeveHOPE Award by Will Reeve, Alexandra Reeve Givens and Matthew Reeve. Kiernan’s incredible vision, leadership, expert guidance and steadfast devotion, which led the foundation into a new era of hope and possibility, was recognized by a standing ovation from the over 600 guests in attendance.

Will Reeve stated, “Peter Kiernan was one of my parents’ closest friends in life. He has lent an immeasurable amount of time, effort and energy to the Foundation. Along with those contributions, he has also donated hundreds of thousands of dollars every year since he joined the board in 1999. And even though his financial contributions are astonishing, Peter’s true value to the Foundation was never clearer than during the trying times after my mother’s passing.”

Will Reeve added, “In the darkest period in our history, Peter emerged as the ultimate leader. He had a vision that was clear and a resolve that was contagious. Peter coined the phrase, ’it’s up to us,’ a mantra that carried everyone through that tumultuous time. His vision wasn’t just to keep the foundation afloat, but rather to expand and increase its impact on the world in the name of my parents. I know that my parents would be proud of all that has been accomplished, and as excited as we all are about what’s in store for the future.”

Additionally during the evening, LPGA star Karrie Webb was presented with the 2011 Christopher Reeve Spirit of Courage Award. A longtime friend and supporter of the Reeve Foundation, Karrie was recognized for her dedication to improving the lives of those living with paralysis. Over the past decade, Karrie has been a tremendous ambassador for the Reeve Foundation. Earlier this year, Karrie donated $100,000 of her LPGA Founders’ Cup winnings to the Reeve Foundation.

Alexandra Reeve Givens stated, “Karrie has experienced first-hand just how inspiring someone living with a spinal cord injury can be.” Her coach, Kelvin Haller, has been living with quadriplegia for two decades. Alexandra continued, “With Kelvin by her side, Karrie has become one of the greatest golfers in history. But as remarkable as Karrie’s accomplishments on the golf course are, we believe that her greatest contributions have happened off the course.”

Peter Wilderotter, president and CEO of the Reeve Foundation, said, “Karrie Webb is one of those special people who constantly reaffirms our belief that what we are doing is worthwhile, and will indeed change the world.”

The hope and the work of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation was demonstrated Wednesday night when Rob Summers took the stage to tell his inspirational story which made headlines worldwide. Summers, a young man from Oregon, was completely paralyzed from the chest down five years ago after being struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run incident. Through the Reeve Foundation’s funding of a major collaborative research effort, Rob Summers was able to stand and bear weight on his legs and move his legs and feet with assistance for the first time. This incredible medical breakthrough has given millions of people a renewed promise of hope.

The evening concluded with dancing and music provided by DJ Cassidy. MANHATTAN Magazine served as the media sponsor. In addition to the festivities at the gala, the Reeve Foundation launched A Magical Auction, their first-ever online auction with the leading charity auction website, charitybuzz. Until A Magical Auction ends on December 13, bidders have the chance to win one-of-a-kind pop culture experiences, VIP events, luxury travel, fine art, couture fashion, upscale merchandise, and more. The winning bids raise money for the Reeve Foundation’s innovative research and Quality of Life programs.

Join Ben Stiller And Donna Karan On Charity Trip To Haiti

Posted by Adam Pollicino on November 21, 2011

Here is your chance to be part of the charity trip of a lifetime – a new celebrity charity auction on CharityBuzz.com is giving you the chance to bid on a seat in Donna Karan’s private plane for a weekend trip to Haiti on a humanitarian trip with Ben Stiller, Dec. 9 – 11, 2011.

Fashion icon Donna Karan is visiting Haiti each month and is learning the country on a very intimate basis. Proceeds from this auction will go to the RFK Center for Justice and Human Rights.

Karan’s donation to the RFK Center shows her support for their wonderful work on the ground in Haiti but also highlights how she views design potential tomorrow. Accompanied by Ben Stiller and other notables, this is an experience not to be missed. The guest list for the working trip – in which a tour of the wonderful work being accomplished in Haiti will be part of the itinerary – is still being finalized.

Donna is truly passionate about the future of Haiti: “For me, Haiti is where all the initiatives I care so passionately about come together; preserving culture, securing the health and well-being for people and the education of the children who represent their tomorrow. The journey of my two worlds – design and philanthropy – picks up in Haiti. Haiti speaks to my heart. It embraces everything we seek to accomplish at Urban Zen and the vision for Haiti is simple: help Haiti help itself by utilizing and organizing its artisans, natural resources and production potential to create business models that can be properly marketed and distributed throughout the US and Europe.

“As an American designer and businesswoman, I have a good sense of what makes a product desirable to the western consumer. My trip to Haiti was in follow-up to a previous visit with the Clinton Foundation, which focused on the opportunities for creative business development. This trip was about working with the creative communities and helping them in anyway I could. Haiti brings out every emotion you have – despair, compassion, love and hope – as well as the excitement of what’s possible with some heartfelt connection and creative collaboration.”

The auction is open until November 29, and can be accessed via CharityBuzz.com.

Ted Turner Celebrates Nothing But Nets Campaign Anniversary

Posted by Adam Pollicino on November 14, 2011

Today marks the 5-year anniversary of the United Nations Foundation’s Nothing But Nets campaign, and UN Foundation Founder and Chairman Ted Turner has spoken up about what the initiative has achieved.

“On November 14, the UN Foundation’s Nothing But Nets campaign commemorates its fifth anniversary and celebrates the significant progress made in the fight against malaria,” said Turner in a statement. “In five years, Nothing But Nets has made history by bringing together the world’s largest grassroots network of partners and supporters to protect families in Africa from malaria. Hundreds of thousands of people have helped Nothing But Nets send more than 6 million insecticide-treated nets through our United Nations partners, protecting families in more than 25 African countries from malaria-carrying mosquitoes.

“Together, we’re pushing back the clock on malaria. Just two years ago, malaria killed a child in Africa every 30 seconds; now, with the help of bed nets and other prevention and treatment tools, we’ve helped push that statistic to 45 seconds.

“Malaria is causing fewer deaths than ever, however we need to keep working to end deaths from this preventable and treatable disease. Half of the world’s population is still at risk, but simple solutions like bed nets are protecting millions of families every night. If we keep up this momentum and continue working together, we can reach the global goal of ending deaths from malaria by 2015.

“Anyone can join us in the fight against malaria. I encourage you to help us continue to send nets and save lives. Take action at www.NothingButNets.net.”
